If your intentions is to extract data from ECC to HANA, without passing through BW, but intent to use MD from BW for reporting. then IMHO, DXC should serve the purpose.
Do note that DXC is actually using embedded BW extractor that reside in ECC, I think you might need to do setup table still, but give it a try and see whether the data is correct.
Try setting up DXC connection to HANA, then extract data from ECC to HANA. After that, Create an Open ODS view linking HANA view leveraging BW MD. and create a query on top of Open ODS view and check the data.
On the side note, in bw 7.4 on hana, you should use Open ODS view rather than Virtual provider.
